Hi All-

I did not dream we'd do so well , given the propagation challenges, but then, the competition was challenged also!

We placed:

Overall: #3 out of 2,720
QRP: #2 out 307 (K6EI got us beat again)
Roanoke Division: #1 out of 213
North Carolina Section: #1 out of 82

Thanks to all in the DFMA and OCRA that did a capital job of preparation, and put in some long hours of operations. I am so looking forward to FD 2016!

73, Dave Snyder, W4SAR

145.45 Repeater is Backup for OCRA Print E-mail

Many of you already know that the OCRA 442.150 is off the air.  The Orange County ARES Training Net, which operates on Saturdays from 9:30 to 9:45 or even to 10 will be held on the TV Hill 145.45 repeater until the OCRA machine has been repaired.

DFMA repeaters have long been designated as backup machines for OC ARES and, similarly, OCRA machines have been designated as backkups for DC ARES.  So don't be surprised if you hear new activity on our repeaters.  And make the visitors feel welcome (many are DFMA members, as well, but have gotten used to using the normally great 442.150 machine.)

Oct 6 Program: A Look at the Internal Workings of AGM VRLA Batteries - Get Maximum Battery Life Print E-mail

Tuesday's program will be "A Look at the Internal Workings of AGM VRLA Batteries; Insights on How to Achieve Maximum Battery Life" by Dan Eddleman, KR4UB.

Dan reports: “This presentation will take a very brief look at the internal construction differences and the gas recombination process that allows VRLA batteries to be sealed, common failure mechanisms, and new charging practices that have been implemented by the major UPS manufacturers to achieve up to 50% longer life. The new charging methods would be easily for a ham to implement.”

Dan is a long time member of both OCRA and the DFMA.  He has also served as the OCRA Repeater Manager and OCRA Treasurer for many years.  In recent years he has been on the DFMA Board and is currently the DFMA Secretary.   Earlier this year Dan presented a program on the use of the antenna modelling program EZNEC.

RS-UV3 Kind-of techie YouTube video Print E-mail

For those who are interested in the much-discussed HobbyPCB RS-UV3 tri band FM transceiver module, there is a recent video showing how the hardware is truly 'repeater grade.'

This demonstration represents remarkably good RF design engineering at this price point.

Nuance of the technical aspects may not be fully apparent to all, but most folks will quickly envision from this short video how well the RS-UV3 will perform in non-repeater applications.

Using a pair of RS-UV3 Radio Shields as a full duplex voice repeater
